April Fools

Got to be a room mom again this year for both Sharra and Sam's classes. Sharra's class party fell on April Fool's Day, so we couldn't resist attempting to prank those street-wise third-graders. ;)

I found this idea in Family Fun magazine. This is the "before" shot--kitchen sponges cut out to look like and Easter egg. This was the longest, most complicated part. I didn't want any of the fake cake to show through.

The "after" image--looks pretty yummy, huh? My other kids were all so jealous that it was for Sharra's class and that they couldn't have any when they saw them in the kitchen the next day.

I frosted each sponge "cake" with dollar store icing and decorated with jelly beans and sprinkles. The part that worried me was that some of the sponges were red and blue--you could kind of tell through the frosting. Chocolate would have been a wiser choice.

The face says it all! We had Sharra's teacher lay out the snacks while we ran games and made all the kids wait to eat until all kids were ready. Ha Ha Ha! We fooled the ones who dug in right away--this poor little boy took a big bite and was gnawing and pulling at the "cake" to rip a bite off before he realized it was an April Fools' joke. When asked about it by the teacher, he said, "I just thought it'd been cooked too much!" The drink was lemon jello. That one actually puzzled the kids the most. It was most of the way set up, so it still juggled well when they sat in their desks like real juice. But when they'd suck it up, nothing happened. Best prank I've ever been able to pull off!

Actually to two different "groups" Adam took one in to his office to share with his partner, Brian. Fooled him too. Took a big bite of it and couldn't figure out why he couldn't bite through the cake. Hee Hee!
